Topic 7 Flashcards
gene
sequence of DNA bases that codes for a protien that can result in a characeristic
alleles
different versions of the same gene
most animals and humans only contain 2 copies of the same gene- one from each parent
Locus
the fixed position that alleles of the same gene are found
diploid organisms
have two copies of each chromosome (one from each parent)
genotype
different alleles an organism has
phenotype
the visible characteristics of an organism based on both the genotype and the enviroment
codominant alleles
when both alleles are expressed in the phenotype because neither one is recessive
eg) codominant genes for a white flower and a red flower would produce a pink flower
monohybrid inheritance
inheritance of a characteristic controlled by a single gene
what is the ratio for a monohybrid cross with two heterozygous parents
usually 3:1 (dominant : recessive)
what is the expected ratio of a monohybrid cross with two heterozygous parents involving codominant alleles
1:2:1
