Topic 6A- Stimuli and Responses Flashcards
What is the role of a receptor?
detects changes in the internal and external environment
What is a photoreceptor?
detects changes in light
Give an example of a mechanoreceptor
the Pacinian Corpuscle
What is a mechanoreceptor?
detects mechanical stimuli in the form of pressure and vibrations
Give three examples of where the Pacinian Corpuscles are located
fingers, soles of feet, external genitalia
What is the connective tissue called in Pacinian Corpuscles?
lamellae
In the Pacinian Corpuscle, what is in the cell surface membrane?
stretch-mediated sodium channels
What happens when the stretch-mediated sodium channels in the Pacinian Corpuscle have pressure?
they become deformed, and as a result, open and allow the rapid influx of sodium ions to occur
In the Pacinian Corpuscle, what does the influx of sodium ions affect?
the +ive charge on the Na ions changes the membrane potential, causing the membrane to become depolarised. resulting in generator potential
What is resting potential in a cell?
the membrane is polarised, and there is a difference in charge
