TOPIC 6: REACTION KINETICS Flashcards
[Definition] Rate of reaction
It is defined as the change in concentration of a reactant or product per unit time
[Definition] Rate equation
It is an experimentally determined mathematical equation between the reaction rate and the concentration of the reactants at a particular temperature
**May not include all reactants in the chemical equation
[Definition] Order of reaction
It is the power to which the concentration of the reactant is raised to in an experimentally determined rate equation
[Definition] Rate constant
It is a proportionality constant for a given reaction at a specified temperature
**Only affected by temperature & catalyst
[Definition] Half-life
The half-life of a reaction is the time taken for the concentration of a reactant to be decreased to half its initial value
[Definition] Rate determining step
It is the slowest step in a sequence of elementary reactions
[Definition] Activation energy
It is the minimum amount of energy that the reactant particles must have to collide effectively to form products
[Definition] Catalyst
A catalyst is a substance that increases the rate of reaction of a reaction by providing an alternative reaction pathway of lower activation energy and remains chemically unchanged at the end of the reaction
[Definition] Catalysis
A process in which the substance increases the rate of a chemical reaction without itself undergoing and permanent chemical change
[Definition] Autocatalysis
A process in which a product of a chemical reaction increases the rate of that reaction
