Topic 6: Magnetism And Electromagnetism Flashcards
1
Q
What is the unit for power
A
Watts
2
Q
What is the difference between hard and soft magnets
A
Hard magnets are permanently magnetised
3
Q
What is induced magnetism
A
When magnetism attracts the same material (like paper clips)
4
Q
What are the two methods you can investigate for the magnetic field lines
A
- Compass method
- Iron filling
5
Q
What is uniform magnetic fields
A
A uniform magnetic field is comprised of straight, parallel lines which are evenly spaced. Between two opposite charges on flat magnets
6
Q
What happens when an electric current put in a conductor
A
It produces a magnetic field (Direction can be worked out by right hand grip)
7
Q
Describe the construction of an electromagnet
A
- Connect a battery to a insulated wire
- Turn it into coils and wrap them around an iron core
- When current passes through, electromagnetic field is created
8
Q
Explain how electromagnetism is used in a motor?
A
- Current flows through the wire to create electromagnetic fields
- Then the force causes the wire to rotate with the direction using left hand Fleming rule.
- Resulting in a simple motor
