Topic 6 - age inequality + the youth Flashcards
introduction?
Defining age is complex, as aging is both a biological and social process. People often view old age as 10-15 years older than their actual age. Factors like health and disability also influence the perception of old age, as some older individuals remain healthy, while younger people may experience age-related issues such as mental health problems or arthritis. As people age, they often face discrimination and inequalities across various aspects of life.
operationalising old age
The definition of old age is changing due to government austerity measures. The age for claiming occupational and state pensions is rising, with claims that people born after 1970 may have to wait until 70 to claim pensions. This change is driven by increasing life expectancy. According to the ONS, about a third of the UK population is over 50, and there are more people aged 60 and above than those under 18.
