Topic 5b- Forces and their effects Flashcards
What does it mean when an object is elastically deformed?
It is able to go back to its original shape and length after
What does it mean if a subject has been inelastically deformed?
It doesn’t return to its original shape and length after the force has been removed
What is the correlation between force and extension of a spring?
The extension of a stretched spring is directly proportional to the force applied
What is the limit of proportionality on a spring?
The limit to the amount of force you can apply to an object for the extension to keep on increasing proportionally
What is a moment?
A moment is the turning effect of a force
what is a moment equal to?
force x perpendicular distance from pivot
How do gears’ rotations differ from eachother in a line?
They alternate from clockwise to anticlockwise
Why would a denser fluid create a higher pressure?
- the fluid is denser and therefore has more particles in a given volume
- this means that more particles are able to collide with eachother and in turn more collisions with the walls of the container, therefore resulting in a higher pressure
What is atmospheric pressure created by
Air molecules colliding with the surface of the Earth
How is upthrust affected by depth?
As pressure increases with depth, the force exerted on the bottom of the object is larger than the force acting on the top of the object
Why does an object that is less dense than a fluid float?
As it weighs less than the volume of fluid it displaces, therefore the upthrust is equal to the object’s weight and it floats
Why does an object with a higher density than the fluid sink?
It weighs more than the equivalent volume of fluid that it displaces. Therefore it is unable displace enough water equal to its weight. Therefore weight is larger than upthrust causing it to sink
