Social - Improvement in peoples standard of living, better health care and access to clean water

A

In some cultures it is traditional for women to stay at home and not work. This can hold back development as there is less household income and more inequality between men and women.

A

It measures economic inequality. Countries are given a score from 0 (equal) to 100 (total inequality). As a country develops it gets lower

A

GDP - The total value of goods and services a country produces in a year.

GDP per capita - GDP divided by the population of a country. Sometimes called GDP per head

Explain 3 physical factors that can affect a country’s development

A

Poor climate - Not much will grow. Reduces amount of food produced leading to malnutrition and poor quality of life. Fewer crops to sell, less money to spend on goods and services.
Few materials - Makes less money due to little products to sell. Less money to spend on development.
Natural disasters - Spend lots of money rebuilding after disasters occurs leading to less money being able to spend on the development.

Explain how colonisation caused countries to struggle in their development.

A

Colonisers controlled economies of their colonies, removed raw materials, slaves and sold back expensive manufactured goods. Leading to the colonised country being dependant on their colonisers which leads to famine.

Why do countries who produces primary products struggle with their development?

A

They don’ t make much profit as their prices tend to be below the cost of production. People makes little money therefore the government spends less on development.
