Topic 5 Environmental Flashcards
1
Q
Name the main study
A
Ulrich (1984)
2
Q
Name the 4 additional studies
A
- Cohen et al
- Newman
- Bickman et al
- Armitage
3
Q
Describe the aim of the main study
A
Does the view that hospital patients have through their window affect their recovery from surgery
4
Q
Describe the sample of the main study
A
- 46 patients from Suburban Pennsylvania hospital
- age between 20-69, no history of psychological disturbances and no serious past-operative complications
- 23 given view of trees, 23 given view of brick wall
- 15 female and 8 male in each condition
5
Q
Describe the method of the main study
A
- all rooms basically identical (except window view)
- patients who had undergone gallbladder removal surgery matched into pairs based on current conditions and previous medical history
- nurse with surgical experience (blind to scene on window) gathered 5 types of information:
- length of hospital stay
- number and strength of analgesics (pain killers) each day
- number and strength of doses for anxiety everyday
- minor complications (unwanted side effects) requiring medication
- nurses notes (good or bad spirits)
6
Q
Describe the results of the main study
A
- tree view patients spent significantly less time in the hospital than the brick wall view patients (7.96/8.70 days)
- tree view patients has more doses of the weaker pain killers than the brick wall patients
- more significantly negative nurses notes made in the brick wall condition (3.96 per patient/1.13 per patient)
7
Q
Describe the research by Bickman et al
A
- Aimed to investigate if how helpful people are is affected by the density of the population
- method consisted of dropping addressed letters in a high, medium or low density dormitory. Measured helping behaviour by the % of letters posted to that address
- results :
- low density 88%
- medium density 79%
- high density 58%
- suggests overcrowding can influence helping behaviour
