Topic 5 - Dynamic Equilibrium Flashcards
What gases are the reactants in the Haber process
Nitrogen and hydrogen
What gas is the product of the Haber process
Ammonia
Define the Haber process
a reversible reaction between nitrogen and hydrogen to form ammonia
What does high pressure do to the rate of equilibrium
High pressure favour the side with fewer molecules, therefore it will favour the forward reaction in the Haber process. Pressure is set higher to increase rate of attainment of yield
Explain temperature used in the Haber process
High temperatures favour the endothermic reaction therefore it will not favour the forward reaction. To increase yield, lower temperatures are used. However, low temperature means a low rate of reaction so a compromise temperautre is used.
What temperature and pressure are used in the haber process
450 C and 200 atmospheres
What are the 3 main elements used in fertilisers
nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium
plants use these nutrients to grow and undergo life processes.
How is ammonia used to process a nitrogen-containing compound
ammonium and nitric acids –> ammonium nitrate (a fertiliser)
ammmonium + nitric acid chemical formula
NH3 (aq) + HNO3(aq) –> NH4NO3 (aq)
