Topic 5- Chemical Analysis Flashcards
What is chromatography used for?
to separate the components in a mixture.
What does separation in chromatography depend on?
differences in the polarity and/or size of molecules
How can a component in chromatography be identified?
by the distance it has traveled or by the time it has
taken to travel through the apparatus (retention
time).
What is a standard solution?
A solution of accurately known concentration.
What does volumetric analysis involve?
using a solution of accurately known concentration in a quantitative reaction to determine the concentration of another substance.
What is an indicator?
An indicator is a substance which changes colour at
the end-point.
What is usually determined by titration?
The volume (usually measured to one decimal
place) of reactant solution required to complete the
reaction is determined by titration.
What is the end point?
The end-point is the point at which the reaction is
just complete.
Name a substance that can act as its own indicator.
potassium manganate(VII)
