Topic 5 Flashcards
Photosynthesis
The process in which green plants trap light energy and transform it into chemical energy
Accessory Pigment
Pigments which absorb wavelengths of light that cannot be absorbed by chlorophyll a or b and pass on the energy to chlorophyll
Thylakoid
Membranous fluid-filled flattened discs
Grana
Thylakoids arranged into stacks
Chlorophyll
Light-trapping pigment which is embedded in the thylakoids membranes
Stroma
The fluid inside the chloroplast that bathes the grana
Chloroplast
Site of photosynthesis
Double membranes and has it’s own ribosomes, enzymes and DNA
Oxidation Reactions
Reactions in which hydrogen is removed
Reduction Reaction
Reactions in which hydrogen is added
Light-Dependent Stage
Occurs in the thylakoid membrane
Inputs are H20, light energy, NADP+, ADP and Pi
Outputs are 02, ATP and NADPH
Carbon Dioxide Fixation Reaction
Reaction in which carbon dioxide is secured in an organic compound
Phosphorylation
A biochemical process that involves the addition of phosphate group to an organic molecule
(ADP+P —>ATP)
Light Independent Stage
Occurs in the stroma of the chloroplast
Inputs are CO2, ATP, NADPH
Outputs are glucose, ADP and P and NADP+
