Topic 5 - 1/2 Flashcards
What is the difference between a Vector and Scalar quantity
Vector has a magnitude with direction but scalar only has a magnitude
Define a contact force
When two objects have to be touching for a force to act
Define non contact force
If the objects do not need to be touching for a force to act
Define weight
A force acting on a object due to gravity
What do you use to measure weight of an object
A Newtonmeter
What is the formula that links Gravitational field strength, Mass and Weight
Weight = Mass X GFS
Define a Resultant force
It is the overall force acting on an object
What are the main examples of a force
Drag, air resistance, weight, driving force, friction
What formula links Distance, Force and Work done
Work done= Force x Distance
How can you tell if a set of forces are balanced using a scale diagram
If all the force arrows are placed tip-to-tail, the the forces are equal.
What are three examples of forces in a spring
Compression
Bending
Stretching
Define Elastic Deformation
An object can go back to its original shape and length after a force has been removed
Define Inelastic Deformation
An object cannot go back to its original shape and length after a force has been removed
What is a limit of proportionality in a spring
The point where there is a limit to the amount of force you can apply to an object for the extension to keep on increasing with the force
What are 6examples of scalar quantities
Temperature
Mass
Distance
Speed
Energy
Time
