Topic 4 The Periodic Table Flashcards

1
Q

How did Mendeleev arrange the elements in his periodic table?

A

He arranged them in order of RAM, and in 8 groups based on their properties, leaving some gaps incase more elements were found

Q

How were Mendeleev’s ideas of grouping elements supported by later discoveries?

A

The discovery of electron orbits and how the number of electrons in the outer shell relate to its properties and so which group it would be put in by Mendeleev

Q

What problem did Mendeleev experience when grouping elements

A

Elements properties are based on their atomic number not their atomic mass and some elements have more neutrons , so based on RAM,, so some had to be moved around so they fit into the groups correctly

Q

How are elements arranged in the modern periodic table?

Q

What is electronic configuration?

A

Electronic configuration is showing how many electrons an atom has in each orbit, can be drawn as a diagram, or written in the form 2, 8, 6(sulfur)
