Topic 4 Study Questions:Endosymbiosis Flashcards
Using diagrams, describe the general features of primary,
secondary and tertiary endosymbiosis.
What form of endosymbiotic process must have taken place if a
chloroplast in a modern algal cell appears enclosed by only 2
membranes? What if it is enclosed by more than 2 membranes?
If it is enclosed by more than membranes than you it must be from secondary endosymbiosis
If it has 2 or less than 2 than you would assume it is from primary endosymbiosis but the membranes can be lost so you cant say with certainty
What level of endosymbiosis are most algae derived from?
secondary
What is a nucleomorph?
This is the remnant of the nuclei of red or green algal symbionts
Evidence of secondary endosymbiosis
Product of Primary Endosymbiosis
Red and green algae
Glacophytes
Product of Secondary Endosymbiosis
Euglenoids
Cryptomonads
Haptophytes
Photosynthetic stramenopiles
Some dinoflagellates
Chlorarachniophytes
Apicomplexans
