Topic 4: Reactivity series and extraction of metals Flashcards
how can metals be arranged in a reactivity series
based on their reactions with:
-water
-dilute hydrochloric acid
-dilute sulfuric acid
how do you deduce the position of a metal within the reactivity series
by using displacement reactions between:
-metals and metal oxides
-metals and aqueous solutions of metal salts
what is the order of reactivity of these metals: calcium, potassium, lithium, aluminium, copper, zinc, iron, silver, sodium, gold, magnesium
potassium
sodium
lithium
calcium
magnesium
aluminium
zinc
iron
copper
silver
gold
under what conditions does iron rust?
iron rust when it comes into contact with oxygen( from the air) and water
how can the rusting of iron be prevented?
barrier methods:
-painting/coating with plastic, can be ideal for large structures
- oiling/greasing, has to be used for moving parts.
galvanising:
-covering the iron in a non-reactive metal
sacrificial protection:
-zinc is often used as a sacrificial metal because it is more reactive than iron.
- big blocks of zinc can be bolted to the iron so the zinc oxidises instead of the iron.
what is oxidization?
the addition of oxygen
what is reduction
the removal of oxygen
what is redox
oxidization and reduction considered together as complementary processes
what is an oxidizing agent?
an oxidizing agent is a substance in a redox reaction that gains or accepts an electron from a reducing agents
what is a reducing agent?
a substance that tends to bring about reduction by being oxidized and losing electrons.
