Q

HOW DOES FPTP LEAD TO A STRONG AND STABLE GOVERNMENT?

A

FPTP PROMOTES A 2 WAY PARTY SYSTEM SO PARTY MAY RECEIVE A MAJORITY. THEY THEN HAVE A MANDATE TO CARRY OUT ITS PROGRAMME AND GOVT CAN BE REMOVED AT NEXT ELECTION IF VOTERS DISAPPROVE OF ITS RECORD. ALSO CONTRIBUTES TO POLITICAL STABILITY AS 1 PARTY CAN NORMALLY GAIN ENOUGH SEATS TO FORM A GOVT WITHOUR COALITIONS.

Q

HOW DOES FPTP EXCLUDE EXTREMIST PARTIES?

A

PARTIES THAT MAY FEED ON RACISM AND OTHER EXTREMIST VIEWS ARE UNLIKELY TO SECURE REPRESENTATION. LARGER PARTIES TEND TO ADOPT MORE MODERATE POSITIONS TO APPEAL TO MAX NUMBER OF VOTERS WHICH HELPS PREVENT POLARISATION.

16
Q

WHY DOES FPTP LEAD TO TACTICAL VOTING?

A

VOTERS MAY FEEL PRESSURED TO VOTE FOR A CANDIDATE THAT THEY BELIEVE HAS A BETTER CHOICE OF WINNER RATHER THAN 1 THEY GENUINELY SUPPORT. DONE TO PREVENT A DISLIKED CANDIATE FROM WINNER RATHER THAN REFLECTING VOTER PREFERENCE.

17
Q

HOW DOES FPTP LEAD TO LIMITED CHOICE?

A

SMALL PARTIES R UNABLE TO GAIN TRACTION AS VOTERS PERCEIVE A VOTE FOR THEM AS WASTED KNOWING THEY’RE UNLIKELY TO WIN A PLURALITY IN ANY GIVEN CONSTIUENCY. ALSO CAN ONLY VOTE FOR 1 CANDIDATE SO DOES NOT CAPTURE FULL RANGE OF PREFERENCE.

18
Q

WHY ARE SAFE SEATS AS A RESULT OF FPTP A BAD THING?

A

VOTERS HAVE LITTLE HOPE OF SEEING FAVOURED CANDIDATES WIN WHICH CAN DEPRESS VOTER TURNOUT.

19
Q

WHAT IS EXAMPLE OF THE NON PROPORTIONALITY THAT FPTP BRINGS?

A

SNP WON 2.5% VOTES AND 9 SEATS.
REFORM WON 14.3% VOTES AND 5 SEATS.

20
Q

WHAT IS EXAMPLE OF SAFE SEAT RESULTS?

A

IN 2015, 364(54%) OF SEATS WERE SAFE AND OVERALL TURNOUT WAS ONLY 66.2%
