Why are computers connected in a network?
- Folders and files stored on file server so can be accessed by users
- Share peripheral devices
- Share internet connection
- User profiles and security can be managed centrally
What is LAN?
LAN = Local Area Network
Operates on single site or across buildings relatively small geographical area. Uses ethernet and cabling usually owned by organisation.
What is WAN?
WAN = Wide Area Network
Used to transmit data over large geographical area. Uses third party or external hardware including phones and internet.
Wired : Transmission Speed
Fast and consistent transmission speed
Wireless : Transmission Speed
Slower than cabled connection
Wired : Range
Ethernet cable maintains a good strength and fibre optic tables
Wireless : Range
Limited to a very small local area and require devices to increase range
What is Latency?
Period of time taken for info to travel from source to destination
Wired : Latency
Very low level of delays in transmission
Wireless : Latency
Great delay in transmission
What is Bandwidth?
Volume of data that can travel along a cable at one time.
