Nation
Nation state
a particular geographical area which a group of people identify
is a nation which has its own independent government controlling a geographical area
Nationality
Is having a citizenship of a nation-state including things like voting rights&a passport
Hall: National identity
- every nation has a collection of stories and symbols which people use to construct and express their national identity
- e.g flags, national anthem and foods
How are national identities formed?
- agencies of secondary socialisation
- through the agencies people learn a common language which is an important aspect of national identity
how does the education system form an individuals national identity
- The subjects taught: citizenship, language,literature and history
- national anthems e.g in America are sung
- and understanding&respect for national values
How does the mass media form an individuals national identity
- promote a national identity by giving higher priority to national news over foreign news
- celebrating national sports e.g national footballl matches
Other ways national identity is formed
ceremonies and rituals and events
- Royal events like weddings
- Bonfire night(Britain)

Why is it difficult to identify a specific British Identity and a British culture
Welsh, Irish, Scottish, English, Indian, Bangladeshi, African Caribbean
Because there’s a wide variety of ethnic groups within Britain

Globalisation and nationality
-a consequence of globalisation is a decline in national cultures>new cultures of hybridity&new hybrid identities
How is the mass media leading to a decline in national identity
- decisions and evens in one part of the world can now have a significant consequence on other parts of the world
- mass media:reports everything instantly&exposes people to other cultures
- exposes people to different cultures including attitudes, values, religious beliefs and fashion
Example of not being able to identify British Foods
curries, samosas, chicken tikka,pasta pizza and Chinese foods are all widely eaten in Britain
Hall: A rise in nationalism
- globalisation may be undermining traditional views of national identity
- this&the growth of EU also gives a rise to nationalism &a reassertion of national identity.
British identity crisis
- growing identity crisis in UK
- the identity is becoming less important to the majority of people
- e.g survey: 67% of individuals identify themselves as Welsh
