TOPIC 4: INEQUALITIES Flashcards
1
Q
4 Ways to solve non-linear inequalities
A
- Algebraic - Factorise
- Algebraic - Completing the square
- Graphic - Draw left and right side of inequality on GC
- Graphic - Equate RHS to 0, draw on GC
2
Q
Number line of repeated linear factors
A
odd integer: + - or - +
even integer: + + or - -
3
Q
When can multiply to remove denominator for inequalities?
A
If 100% the denominator is positive, can multiply over
But if unsure if denominator is positive or negative, CANNOT, because won’t know if need to change direction of < > or not
4
Q
6 Steps for solving inequalities questions
A
- Rewrite as f(x) >/< 0
- Factorise both numerator and denominator
- If cannot factorise, complete the square to prove ≥ 0
- Draw number line
- Take note if open circle or closed circle
- Solve inequality
