Topic 4: forces/density/pressure Flashcards
Define center of gravity
a point where the entire weight of the object seems to act.
Define center of mass
a point where the entire mass of the object seems to be concentrated.
Define both center of mass and center of gravity
the point through which a single force has no turning effect on the body.
define moment
the turning effect of a force
what is the equation for moment
moment = force x perpendicular distance between pivot and line of action of force
What are the units for moment
Newton meters, Nm
What is a couple
a pair of forces. same magnitude but opposite directions. parallel but not along the same line. cause a rotation.
What is the torque of a couple
the turning force produced by the couple.
what is the equation for the moment (torque) of a couple
moment = force x perpendicular distance between lines of action.
what is the principle of moments
total clockwise moments about a point are equal to the total anti-clockwise moments about the same point.
What does it mean when an object is in equilibrium
no net force and no net moment acting on the body. the forces and moments are balanced.
