Topic 4; external factors that influences educational achievement - gender Flashcards
how has feminism impacted the educational system and what sociologist studied this?
McRobbie - studied girls magazines and found that in the 1970’s, there was a strong on women getting married and having children whereas now they value women becoming independent (liberal feminists - equal pay act 1970, sex discrimination act 1975)
how has girls ambition changed and what sociologist studied this?
Sharpe - found that in the 1970’s girls aimed their ambitions towards having children and getting married; they say their future in terms of their domestic role whereas in the 1990’s girls priorities changed to wanting to pursue a career and become independent
how has primary socialisation of children influences their attitudes towards education?
McRobbie - bedroom culture; parents socialise girls into staying safe at home whereas boys have more freedom as society tends to stereotype them as boisterous and capable of defending themselves
this so called bedroom culture means that girls are more likely socialised into reading and writing whereas this unlikely for boys as reading is stereotyped as a feminine activity
