Topic 4: Energy Resources and Energy Transfer Flashcards
What is the principle of conservation of energy?
energy can be stored and transferred but it can NEVER be created or destroyed
total energy input =
useful energy output + wasted energy
What is conduction?
process where vibrating particles transfer energy from their kinetic store to the kinetic store of neighbouring particles
How can you reduce convection?
-stop fluid from moving (e.g. trapping pockets of air, insulation)
Black surfaces are good…
absorbers/ emitters of radiation
Shiny surfaces are poor…
absorbers/ emitters of thermal radiation
What is power?
the rate at which energy is transferred
What are the advantages of Nuclear power?
-doesn’t produce greenhouse gases
-uranium is in high supply
What are the advantages of Wind farms?
-cheap to run
-renewable (won’t run out)
-doesn’t release any polluting gases
What are the advantages of Geothermal power?
-renewable
-no environmental problems
What are the advantages of Fossil fuels?
-releases lots of energy (quite cheaply)
-reliable
-power stations already exist (easy/ cheap)
What are the advantages of Solar cells?
-renewable
-no pollution
What are the advantages of Wave power?
-no pollution
-renewable
-minimal running costs
What are the advantages of Tidal barrages?
-renewable
-no pollution
What are the advantages of Hydroelectric power?
-reliable
-low running costs
-renewable
