Topic 4 Definitions Flashcards
What is biodiversity?
The variety of living organisms in an area.
- (It’s components are species diversity and genetic diversity)
What is species diversity?
The number of different species and the abundance of each species in a community.
Give 2 definitions of genetic diversity.
- The variety shown by individuals of that species.
2. The variation of alleles within a species.
What is endemism?
When a species is unique to a single place.
What is a habitat?
A place where an organism or a community of organisms live including all living and non-living factors of the surrounding environment.
What is a species?
A group of similar organisms that can reproduce to produce fertile offspring.
What is speciation?
The development of a new species.
What is a niche?
The role of a species within a habitat.
- (This includes the physical environment that it has become adapted to, the interactions with other living organisms and the interactions with the non-living environment.)
What is taxonomy?
The science of classification.
What is phylogeny?
The study of evolution and the way different organisms and species are related to each other.
