Police
Underlying Philosophy:
- they aim to keep society safe and cut levels of crime
- they aim to not discriminate and to be ethical and treat everyone fairly
Aim & Objectives:
- protect the public
- support of the victims
- uphold laws firmly
How They Are Funded:
- the police funding comes from the central government grants
Working Practices:
- they are divided into 43 constabularies around the country and the police work with offenders as they are responsible for enforcing the law and they work with different levels of criminals
The CPS
Underlying Philosophy:
- they make sure that the right person is prosecuted for the right offence
- the prosecutors must be satisfied that there is sufficient evidence to prosecute a suspect
Aims and Objectives:
- to decide which cases gets prosecuted
- they advise the police
- the prosecutors must be fair
How They Are Funded:
- the government funds the CPS and the CPS recovers criminal assets through its confiscation
Working Practices:
- they are involved in the prosecution of every single person prosecuted of offence in England and Wales.
HM Courts & Tribunal Service
Underlying Philosophy:
- the courts believe in giving people and business access to justice
- includes victims and witnesses of crime and defendants accused of crimes and ensures that due process is provided for all
Aims and Objective:
- aims to provide tribunals and trials for all that need them
- they have objectives to continue to expand their provision in terms of tribunals and trials
How They Are Funded:
- it is regulated by the ministry of justice and receives funding from governments grants
Working Practices:
- 91 crown courts
- 150 magistartes courts
- 170 county courts
The Judiciary
Underlying Philosophy:
- it provides important justice in criminal cases and they operate in accordance with the due process model in ensuring that they receive a fair trial
Aims & Objectives:
- to ensure the rule of law and legal security
- make sure the law is interpreted correctly
How they are Funded:
- they are funded through the government
- the council of the judiciary should have the right to propose a budget
Working Practises:
- Judges operate in 4 different courts
HM Prison Service
Underlying Philosophy:
- the prisons believes in punishing the offender while keeping ethics in tact and they want individuals to lead law-abiding lives in and out of prison and to make their time in prison not wasted.
Aims & Objectives:
- they house offenders during their prison sentence, providing a safe and secure environment
- they perform security checks and search procedures on prisoners
How They Are Funded:
- they receive a government grant allowance from HM prison and probation service
Working Practices:
- prisons in Uk are national
The National Probation Service
Underlying probation :
- the probation service believes in reducing reoffending rates by supervising and effectively those that have been released from prison
Aims & Objectives:
- it works with around 30,000 offenders to support them in their rehab
they communicate the wellbeing of victims of serious sexual and violent offences.
How They Are Funded:
- they funded by the HMPPS an executive agency of the ministry of justice and money comes from taxes
Working Practices:
- there are 7 divisional areas of the CPS with 35 probation trusts working within them
Charities & Pressure Groups
Underlying Practices:
- helps others and improves society
- a pressure group will try to instigate social change in relation to something they see as negative
Aims & Objectives:
Prison Reform Trust = They promote human rights to prisoners, improve treatment of those in prisons, reduce unnecessary imprisonment, it promotes community solutions to criminality.
How They Are Funded:
- they are nonprofit organisations so they cannot make money
- they need money to run and it comes from donations and sometimes governmental funding
Working Practices:
- conducting research
- running campaigns
- lobbying governments
