Topic 4 - Chemical Changes Flashcards
Why is carbon an exception in the reactivity series?
It is not a metal and it is most commonly used to obtain a pure metal from an ore through displacement
What is an ore?
A rock conatining a high precentage of metal which can be extracted for profit
Which substances have been oxidised and reduced in this reaction?
Copper oxide + Carbon –> Carbon Oxide + Copper
Copper Oxide - Reduced
Carbon - Oxidised
What is the reactivity series?
It shows us how reactive certain substances are
List the reactivity series (as well as you can)
Potassium Sodium Lithium Calcium Magnesium Carbon Zinc Iron Hydrogen Copper
Why is the reactivity series helpful?
It enables us to perform displacement reactions and to extract metals from ores
What does OILRIG stand for?
Oxidation is losing electrons whereas Reduction in gaining electrons
