Topic 4-6 Flashcards
What’s an electrode?
The metals at the end of the battery. (Must be different in order to work)
What’s an electrolyte?
It’s the substance that is in between the two metal electrodes
What’s a primary cell?
A cell that can’t be recharged
What’s a secondary cell?
A cell that can be recharged
What’s a wet cell?
Cell with a liquid electrolyte
What’s a dry cell?
A cell with a paste, plastic or ceramic solid electrolyte
What has more voltage:
3 cells connected in parallel or
3 cells connected in series ?
3 cells connected in series. They work together (in a way)
What’s a generator ?
It converts -
magnetism (motion) to electricity
What’s a DC generator ?
A DC generator is a generator that has a split ring commutator and only produces electricity in one way. It produces electricity by using a magnet and a copper wire
What’s an AC generator?
An AC generator, goes in 2 directions and and uses a slip ring commutator. It produces electricity by using magnets and copper wire
What’s a motor?
A motor converts:
Electricity to magnetism (motion)
What’s a DC motor?
It uses an armature (what the copper wire is on and it spins in the magnet) , a commutator (where the ring is that spins the armature) and a permanent magnet (magnet + copper) to create motion.
Usually used in small appliances
What’s an AC motor?
An AC motor uses a stator and rotor (toilet bowl washer in the toilet bowl washer holder) usually used in larger appliances
What’s an electromagnet?
An electromagnet is when a iron core is inserted in between copper wire with an electric charge and creates a magnet .
What is an electrochemical cell?
It contain electrodes and electrolytes
