Topic 4 Flashcards
Testing for barium carbonate with sulphuric acid
It will be seen as not valid as most carbonates produce gas but barium sulphate is an insoluble precipitate
Reactivity of group 1 and 2
Outer ELECTRON further away
Increased shielding
First ionisation energy decrease so reactivity increase
Thermal stability of group 1 and 2
Group 2 has more electrons (similar size due to same subshell)
Group 2 more likely to polarise
HCL and carbonate
-effervesence
2H++Co32-_____>Co2+H2O
Flame test
energy released as visible light
diff amount of energy released so colour is different
Ammonium and hydroxide
NH4+ + OH-____>NH3+H2O
Hydrated magnesium chloride heated
-Brown gas
-solid dissolves
-White solid forms
