Topic 4 Flashcards
when metal reacts with water what does it form?
Metal + water → metal hydroxide + hydrogen
When a metal reacts with dilute acid what does it form?
Metal + acid → salt + hydrogen
if the metal is more reactive, what will happen to the reaction?
the reaction will be faster
In the reactions of metals with water, steam and acids does the metal gain or lose electrons?
the metals loses electrons and forms cations.
what can a more reactive metal do to a less reactive metal?
the more reactive metal can displace the less reactive metal from its compound
give an example of a displacement reaction
magnesium + copper sulphate → magnesium sulphate + copper
Mg(s) + CuSO4(aq) → MgSO4(aq) + Cu(s)
where are metals extracted from?
Ores
define oxidation
when oxygen is added to the substance
define reduction
when oxygen is removed from the substance
what is an ore?
An ore is a rock that contains enough of a metal to make it economical to extract
what does the extraction of a metal depend on?
metal’s position in the reactivity series
what metals can be extracted by carbon?
Any metal below carbon in the reactivity series, a metal that’s more reactive can’t be displaced
what metals can be extracted by electrolysis?
Any metal above carbon in the reactivity series
what’s an example of oxidised and reduced reaction?
iron oxide + aluminium → aluminium oxide + iron
what are the advantages of recycling metals?
more economic, less damage to the environment, saves valuable raw material
