206
What is the axial skeleton?
Bones of skull, vertebral column, rib cage
What is the appendicular skeleton?
Bones of upper and lower limbs and pelvic girdles
What 2 sets of bones does the skull have?
Cranial and facial
The cranium is divided into a cranial vault and a cranial base. What are the three areas of the cranial base?
Anterior (highest) fossa, middle fossa, and posterior (lowest) fossa
What are the 8 bones of the cranium?
(Mnemonic: PEST OF):
Parietal
Ethmoid
Sphenoid
Temporal
Occipital
Frontal
What are the names of the four sutures for the parietal bones?
Metopic / squamous
Coronal
Sagittal
Lambdoid
What is the foreman magnum, part of the occipital bone?
It is a large hole at the base of the occipital bone that is a passage to connect the brain and spinal cord.
What are the three different areas of the temporal bones?
Squamous, tympanic, and petrous
What is the mastoid process in the temporal bones?
It is a major attachment area for some neck muscles
What is the styloid process in the temporal boones?
It is the attachment area for muscles of the tongue and some neck muscles. (It’s important for swallowing and speech.)
Why is the sphenoid bone known as the keystone bone?
Because it articulates with numerous other cranial bones and brings them together like a keystone in an arch.
What are sphenoid sinuses? (What is it’s purpose?)
They are air like cavities that make the skull lighter.
What are the four major cranial sutures?
Squamous
Coronal
Sagittal
Lambdoid
What are the unpaired facial bones?
Mandible and vomer
