Topic 33: Descent Modification Flashcards
Explain the concept of Evolution
Evolution is heritable change overtime in a population.
Explain Natural Selection
Natural Selection is how an organisms current environment helps select for advantageous traits (adaptations) in populations overtime.
Describe the Evidence of Evolution
The Evidence of Evolution are determined as Four Types:
- Direct Observation
- Homology: Similar structures with diverse functions.
- Fossil Records: Information about how life on Earth has changed overtime.
- Biogeography: How the distribution of species today learn about their evolutionary relationships with one another.
Discuss the importance of the theory of evolution for understanding modern biology
The theory of evolution gives an explanation of how heritable changes can bring different adaptations and traits on a organisms population over time.
Describe Darwins and Wallaces role in the development of the theory of Evolution
Darwin worked on finches in Galapagos, where he discovered that a similar species had evolved different features due to its environment.
Wallaces worked on other species but eventually caught on the natural selection theory.
How the animals without the trait can be a target for predators and are eventually eliminated from the environment.
