Topic 3.2 Chromosomes Flashcards
Is DNA “naked” if so explain why?
Yes it is, and it means it’s not associated with proteins
What is a Plasmid ?
A plasmid is a small circular DNA that is different from the chromosomes DNA
Can prokaryotes exchange plasmids?
Yes
What is the Endosymbiotic Theory?
Eukaryotic cells orginated from prokayotic cells
How long is the prokayotic DNA?
It is relatively long, 1.100um
What did Endosymbiotic Theory show?
It showed that prokaryotic DNA is a single circular DNA molecule
It also showed that Eukaryotic DNA is linear
What are homologous chormosomes?
Some sequence of genes, but not all the same alleles
One chromosome came from each parent
What are Haploid (Sex Cells)
Cell with one chromosome of each type
Human Gametes have 23 chromosomes
(n)
What are dihaploid (Nematic Cells)?
Cell with two chromosomes of each type (Pairs of homologous chromosomes)
Human somatic cells have 46 chromosomes
(2n)
What are Gametes?
Most cells in the body are somatic (diploid)
What are sex chromosomes?
They are chromosomes that determine sex
What are autosomes?
All other chromosomes that do NOT determine sex
What are Karyograms?
It is a diagram of chromosomes
What is a Karyote?
Property of a cell
