Topic 3: Thermal Physics Flashcards
Under what conditions will a real gas behave like the ideal gas?
Low pressure, moderate temperature, low density.
What are the assumptions about the kinetic energy of an ideal gas?
- No intermolecular forces
2. Molecules undergo perfect elastic collisions
Where does pressure come from and what’s the relationship between the change in momentum and force?
Pressure originates from the collision between molecules and the wall of the container.
Impulse = change in momentum = force exerted on the wall multiply time.
What’s the definition of mole?
The amount of substance that contains as many elementary entities as the number of atoms (important) in 12 g of carbon-12.
Define Molar Mass
the mass of one mole of a substance.
Assumption of an ideal gas?
Negligible volume/point object
