Topic 3: Tectonic processes and landforms Flashcards
What are the layers of the earth?
Inner core, Outer core, Mantle and Crust.
What is the Crust?
The solid outer layer of the earth.
What is a tectonic plate?
The earth’s crust and upper mantle is split into sections.
What is a Plate Boundary or Plate Margin?
The place where two plates meet.
What are the two types of crusts/plates?
- Continental (around 35km deep)
= Oceanic (6-8km deep)
What is the lithosphere?
The crust and upper mantle, a rigid outer layer.
What are the different types of plate boundaries?
Constructive, Destructive, Conservative and Collision.
What is a constructive plate boundary?
Where crustal plates diverge or pull apart from each other.
What is a destructive plate boundary?
Where plates converge where an oceanic and continental plate come together.
What is an Earthquake?
A tremor on the surface on earth, from shockwaves generated by movement of rock within the ground. They usually occur due to tectonic movements.
What is a volcano?
A mountain created by the eruption and deposition of lava and ash from a vent in the ground.
