Topic 3 -redox Flashcards
what is oxidation?
is the process of electron loss
- gain of oxygen
- loss of hydrogen
What is reduction?
- the process of electron gain.
- loss of oxygen
- gain of hydrogen
What is disproportiation?
is the name for a reaction where an element in a single species is simultaneously oxidised and reduced.
What is a reducing agent?
-it is an alectron donor.
a reducing agent is the species that causes another element reduce. it is itself oxidised in the reaction.
What is an oxidising agent?
- it is an electron acceptor
- an oxidising agent is the species that causes another element to oxidse. it itself reduced in the reaction.
What causes an element in a compound to have a negative oxidation number?
being more electronegative
How to name a compound using oxidation numbers
Provide the oxidation number of the unknown element e.g. sulfur(vi) oxide for SO3
How to form an equation using oxidation numbers?
- form an ionic half equation for the element that changes oxidation, ignoring other elements
- balance the charge of the reactants using H+ for acid and OH- for base
- add water to the products
