Topic 3 - Particle model of matter Flashcards
Explain how to find the density of a solid object
Measure the mass of the object with a balance
Submerge in eureka can filled with water - collect the displaced water and measure its volume. Take this away from the total original water.
Use the density formula
Explain how to find the density of a liquid
Place a measuring cylinder on a balance at 0
Pour 10ml of liquid and record the mass. Pour another 10 and record its mass. Repeat this until full.
For each measurement record the density and find the average across all calculations.
Name the 5 changes of state
freezing, melting, evaporating/boiling, condensing, sublimating.
What is the internal energy of a system
The total energy that its particles have in their kinetic and potential stores
What is the formula for specific latent heat?
Energy = Mass x Specific latent heat. E = mL
What is specific latent heat?
Amount of energy needed to change 1kg of a substance from one state to another without changing temperature
Why do gas particles exert a force upon collision? What happens to pressure as particle speed increases
The particles move at fast speeds so bang into many things - if they move faster the pressure increases
What is the relationship between pressure and volume?
They are inversely proportional.
What will happen to the pressure inside an object if the pressure outside decreases.
The pressure inside decreases
What is the effect of doing work on a gas?
It increases the temperature
