Q

What are neurotransmitters?

A

Chemicals are used at the synapse. These are
called neurotransmitters and are produced at the terminal of a
neurone and then diffuse across the gap to the next neurone or
gland.

Q

What happens to the chemicals in the brain?

A

In the brain chemicals are passed through the cerebral
spinal fluid (CSF), one such being Dopamine that is a
neurotransmitter which, in high levels, is implicated in
schizophrenia.

Q

What are 2 advantages and 1 disadvantge of the biological approach?

A

Advantages:

  1. The biological approach adopts scientific methods for investigation using measures which are largely objective (not subject to personal opinion) such as brain scanning and biochemical levels.
  2. Biopsychological research can result in practical applications being developed such as drugs that help the symptoms of people struggling with psychological problems.

Disadvantage:

  1. It is argued that some biological explanations are too simplistic and do not do the complexity of human behaviour justice. This means they are reductionist as they can often fail to acknowledge the role of the environment in behaviour.
Below is a table referencing research studies included in this book that could be used to support the biological approach upon which they are based. Other such examples can be found within the book, including the paper three optional topics.

Q

What debate is the biological approach a strong supporter of?

A

The biological approach strongly supports the nature perspective in the nature-nurture debate as it argues for genetic influence on behaviour.
