Topic 3 - Networks Flashcards
What is a server?
a computer program or device that provides a service to another computer program and its user, the client
What is a Client?
Computers that access and use the network and shared network resources, basically users of the network as they receive and request services. Examples include personal computers.
What is Transmission Media?
Facilities used to interconnect computers in a network, such as twisted pair wires and coaxial cables.
What is Shared Data?
Data that file servers provide to clients such as data files, printer-access programs and e-mails.
What are Shared printers and other peripherals?
Hardware resources provided to the users of the network via servers. Resources provided include data files, printers and etc.
What is a Network Interface Card (NIC)?
A computer hardware component that connects the computer to a network.
What is The Local Operating System?
An operating system that is Is used for authentication and authorization of users who access WebSphere application server resources.
What is the Network Operating System?
A program that runs on computers and servers that allow the computers to communicate over the network.
What is a Hub?
A device that splits a network connection into multiple computers (basically a distribution center.)
E.g., computer requests info from network or computer then request is sent to hub through via cable. Hub receives request then sends it to entire network. Each computer in network should then figure out whether broadcast data is for them or not.
What is a Switch?
A telecommunication device, basically a hub but built-in w/ more advanced features. Uses physical device addresses in each incoming messages so that it can deliver the message to the right destination or port.
What is Router?
A device used to connect a LAN with an internet connection. when you have two LANS (2 distinct networks) or want to share a single internet connection to multiple computers, you use this device. There are 2 types, wired and wireless.
What is a LAN Cable?
LAN stands for local area network and is a wired cable used to connects a device to the internet or other devices like printers and computers.
What is an example of a Client?
Personal Computer or Laptop etc.
What is Transmission Media also known as?
Transmission Medium Channels
What is a Switch similar to?
