What is a Monk/Nun?
They are people who fully commit themselves to religious life. Monk refering to men. Nun refering to Women.
What is a Monastary?
A building in which Monks live in a community.
What is a Convent?
A building in which Nuns live in a community.
What is Contemplative Order?
Involves living a hidden life of work and prayer.
What is Apostolic Order?
Involves working in the community.
What are the Three vows Monks and Nuns make?
- Obedience - the promise to obey Christ
- Poverty - you cannot own anything
- Chastity - you cannot marry
What does being Postulant mean?
You spend time at a Monestary/Convent while not being bound by vows and free to leave at any time.
What is a Novice Monk/Nun?
After being Postulant for a certain period you become a Novice for about a year. In this time you can start fully participating in the Monestary while still not being bound to it.
How many Sacraments are there in the Roman Catholic Church?
There are 7 Sacraments
Why is the Priest’s hand annointed with Holy oil?
The hands are for blessing
What does the Priest symbolise when he lies Prostrate on the floor?
He shows Humility
What is believed to happen the moment when the Bishop lays his hands on the head of the man being ordained?
It is believed that the Holy Spirit fills the man being ordained.
What is a Chaplain?
Usually a Lay person who performs religious services and guidance.
What can the Body of Christ mean?
- The people of God
- Holy Communion
- Jesus’ Physical Body - the idea that we personally make up his body.
What is Poverty?
Not having enough money to meet basic daily needs.
What is Absolute Poverty?
Severe Deprivation of Basic needs.
What is Relative Poverty?
Your income is considerably below the average level within that country.
What is a Emerging Nation?
A country which may not have enough income to meet their basic needs.
What is a MEDC (More Economically Developed Country)?
A counry with a strong economy in which most people enjoy a good standard of living.
What is a Lay person?
An ordinary member of the Church who wishes to carry out it’s mission.
What are the Seven principles of CST (Catholic Social Teaching)?
- Dignity
- Solidarity
- The Common Good
- Option for the Poor
- Peace
- Creation and Environment
- The Dignity of Love and Participation
How can you carry out CST?
- Helping the Vunerable/Less Priveledged
- Cleaning the Environment/More Environmentally friendly
- Volunteering to Local Charities
