Prophet
One who is appointed by God to convey a divine message.
Qur’an (Koran)
The sacred book of Islam; the word of God revealed to the prophet. Also the Arabic word for ‘revelation’ or ‘reading’.
Revelation
God’s disclosure of himself and his will to his people.
Allah
The Arabic word for the one and only God.
Bedouin
Arab desert nomad.
Ka’ba
Cube-shaped religious shrine believed to have been erected by Adam and then rebuilt by Abraham. The central shrine of Islam.
Oligarchy
A form of government in which the power is investigated in a few, or in a dominant class or clique.
Polytheism
The belief in many gods or more than one God.
Infallible
Absolutely trustworthy; inerrant (free from error).
Umma
Islamic community; refers to the worldwide Muslim community.
Usury
Leading money for interest.
Caliph
Refers to the successor of Muhammed as leader of the Islamic community.the caliph performs three functions - political administration, tax collecting and ensuring the security of the Muslim nation.
Hajj
Annual pilgrimage to Mecca in the month of Dhu’l-Hijja and required of all Muslims at least once in their lifetime, if possible. Hajj is also the title of one who has made this pilgrimage.
Al-Hijra
Migration of Muhammed and his followers from Mecca to Medina in 622CE, where he established an independent Muslim community state.
Qibla
Direction of the Ka’ba at Mecca to which Muslims must face when performing their daily ritual prayers.
Hadith
The traditional reports of what the Prophet Muhammed did and/or said. They are second only to the Qur’an in religious importance.
