Topic 3- Experiments Flashcards
1
Q
why are laboratory experiments reliable?
A
- once an experiment has occured then scientists can replicate it
- they will produce the same results each time making it highly reliable
2
Q
give 3 practical problems of lab experiments
A
- it is impossible to control everything else that might affect what they are researching
- can only study small samples
- cannot be used to study the past as you cant control variables that were acting in the past
3
Q
give 3 ethical problems of lab experiments
A
- lack of informed consent
- deception- lying on purpose of research
- harm
4
Q
what did Milgram 1974 research?
A
- researched people’s willingness to obey instructions from authority
- told people it was about learning where he made them give people electric shocks when they got a question wrong
- people were seen to be sweating stuttering tremble amongst other things
5
Q
what do interpretivists think about lab experiments?
A
- humans are different to animals and plants and have free will
- this means behaviour can’t be explained with cause and affect
- so lab experiments arent a good method to use to research
6
Q
what type of experiments do interpretivists agree with?
A
field experiments
comparative method
7
Q
2 features to distinguish a field experiment from a lab one
A
- takes place in natural surroundings
- not aware they are in an experiment
8
Q
evaluation of field experiments
A
- the more realistic a situation is the less control they have so don’t know exactly what variables have an effect on the person
- unethical as there is no informed consent
9
Q
name the 3 types of experiments
A
- field
- lab
- comparative method
