Topic 3 - Classification Flashcards
What are the 4 Kingdoms under the Eukaryota Domain?
- Animals
- Plants
- Fungi
- Protists
What are the 3 Domains?
- Eukaryota
- Bacteria
- Archaea
What are the ‘Archaea’ and ‘Bacteria’ Domains classified as?
Prokaryotes.
What Kingdom is under the Archaea Domain?
Archaebacteria.
What Kingdom is under the Bacteria Domain?
Eubacteria.
Define Biodiversity.
Biodiversity is the measure of the variety of living organisms in an area/the world.
Why do we Classify organisms?
- Classifying organisms helps scientists identify new species easier.
What are taxonomic groups?
Taxonomic groups are hierarchical categories used by scientists to organise living organisms in to groups based on their characteristics.
What are the 8 Taxonomic groups in order?
- Domain
- Kingdom
- Phylum
- Class
- Order
- Family
- Genus
- Species
Why do we use the Binomial naming system?
It is a universal way to name & Identify living organisms, so scientists all over the world can avoid confusion.
What are the 3 main rules when using the Binomial system?
- Use Italics
- The Genus name should be capitalised whereas the species name should be lowercase (e.g. Homo sapiens).
- After the first use, binomial names are abbreviated to the first letter of the Genus name followed by the species name
(e.g. H. sapiens).
