What is urbanisation?
Urbanisation is the growth in the proportion of a country’s living in urban areas.
Describe the trend of urbanisation in a developed country.
Developed countries have very slow rates of urban growth.
What is a megacity?
A megacity is an urban area with over 10 million people living there (our example = mumbai in india)
What is a primate city? What are two influences it has on it’s country?
Primate cities are cities that dominate thier country, and have a much larger population than many other cities combined. Two influences are; Investment - businesses often locate there, Migration - there are lots of jobs fo people to move and find work.
Give three push & pull factors of migration.
Push : a shortage of jobs or low wages, poor standard of living, war or conflict, poor healthcare educ.
Pull : more employment, higher wages, better standard of living, healthcare, educ. safer and cleaner environment.
Give an example of an economic change that leads to migration in developed countries.
De-industrialisation has led to decline of industrial areas - people then moved away to find work elsewhere. E.g. Sunderland
What are the four economic sectors and give examples.
Primary - raw materials such as farming, mining, etc.
Secondary - manufacture such as textiles, furniture, cars, etc.
Tertiary - services such as nursing, retail, etc.
Quaternary - information economy such as IT industry, electronics, etc.
What is suburbanisation?
Suburbanisation is the movement of people from the middle of the city to the edges - urban areas expanding.
Give two reasons why de-industrialisation occurs.
Industry moves out of city centres into rural areas where rent is cheaper.
Industry moves overseas where costs are lower - known as global shift.
What is counter-urbanisation?
It is the movement of people away from large urban areas to smaller settlements and rural areas.
Name the three different types of land use in a city.
Commercial - office buildings, shopping centres, hotels, etc.
Residential - all sorts of housing
Industrial - factories and warehouses, etc.
Describe the zones of a ‘model’ city that from concentric rings.
Central business district (CBD) - commercial land use, high density buildings, major roads.
Inner city - mainly residential (low-class housing) older industry.
Suburbs - mainly residential (medium-class housing)
The rural-urban fringe - mix of commercial buildings and residential (high-class houses) more green space.
