Topic 3 : cell structure Flashcards
what are the limitations to cell size, considering the surface area to volume ratio
-a greater surface allows for more metabolic processes to occur
-if you have a larger volume, then you will in turn need a larger surface area to sustain the needs of the cell
what are the differences/similarities in the structure of eukaryotes and bacteria (prokaryotic)
-prokaryotes are smaller than eukaryotes
-prokaryotes are only single celled where as eukaryotes can be single or multi celled
-they both have a plasma membrane
-prokaryotes lack membrane enclosed organelles
-prokaryotes DNA is not membrane enclosed where as eukaryotes DNA is
-Cytoplasm in the prokaryote is the entire inside
-cytoplasm in the eukaryote is between the nucleus and the plasma membrane
-prokaryotes are overall simple in structure where as eukaryotes are complex
-both have ribosomes which make proteins
endomembrane theory
-the idea that eukaryotes came from a heterotrophic prokaryotic cell
