What is Deference
The traditional respect given by lower class members to upper class members
- this lowered after the war due to the loss in confidence of the working class had in the upperclass generals
- also the decline of the deference happened as middle and lower class men interacted in the trenches
why was there a decline in the upper class
because the aristocrats could no afford to pay death duties so they had to sell their big houses
what caused the decline in defence in the 50s
the relaxation of consumer credit meant that working house holds could gain more things

what was the 1963 John Profumo scandal
It was the first sex scandal to be published in mainstream media
Minister of War john Profumo was caught sharing a 19 year old sexual partner with a powerful Russian soviet
normally these kind of rumours were ignored by the press or printed in Satirical magazines such as the Private eye
How did sex scandals relate to the decline of deference
- people were shocked that people in power acted that way
- gave people in power a bad rep therefore disliked by the lower classes
When was the mini skirt invented
1964 by British Designer Mary Quant
- juxtaposes the normal design of the 50s- long
- led to the sexual liberation for women
- contradicted the conservative values of the 50s
what was the popular view from foreign observers on British /peoples attitudes towards sex
That Britain was sexually repressed
- only 1 /10th of the population had had sex education
- sex wasnt mentioned in the press or in public
- The backlash towards Lady Chatterly’s lover (1960) by the older generations and embraced by the younger generations
What changed in attitudes towards sex in the 60s
The publishing of books about sex had widened
- increased openness in newspapers
- reporting of sex scandals and using sex to sell consumer goods
