topic 3 Flashcards
Describe the Peripheral Nervous System
PNS is to carry messages to and from the CNS to the rest of the body
Identify the structures of a neuron
- Cell Body
- Axon
- Axon Terminal
- Myelin Sheath
- Dendrites
- Nucleus
the nervous system is split into two parts, what are they
The CNS and PNS
What does CNS consist of?
The Brain and the Spinal Chord
What is the nervous system?
a network of cells that allows animals to respond rapidly to their enviroment
What is the function of the Cell Body in a neuron?
Houses the nucleus and maintains neuron’s health.
What does the Axon do?
Carries electrical impulse from the cell body to the axon terminals.
What is the role of the Axon Terminal?
Carries the impulse to the next neuron.
What is the Myelin Sheath?
A fatty layer covering in the axon terminal to speed up the nerve impulse along the axon.
What are Dendrites?
Branch-like structures that receive messages from other neurons.
What is the Nucleus in a neuron?
Control center of the neuron, ensuring it is functioning correctly and surviving.
