- the main concern in 1529?
- what were the the main reasons for henrys campaign against the church?

A

529 = aggressive campaign to increase power over Eng. church at the church’s expense of Rome’s power.
- Main concern in 1529 = divorce Cath of A. needed divorce = Cath couldn’t secure succession with a male heir.
- Falling in love w Anne = convinced god disapproved of marriage w Cath = added to determination to get divorce.
- Used threat of breaking from Rome = pressurise pope to grant divorce however, pope under control of caths nephew, Charles V = unwilling to grant annulment.

A

= influenced by spread of Protestant ideas
= eg, most significant people in life supported religious reforms (Boleyn and Cromwell)
= 1528 = Tyndale’s book, Obedience of the Christian man, a banned book = argued God had always intended the church to be rules by kings rather than the church - given by Boleyn. - believed he should oversee every part of England.
= said the book was ‘for me and all kings’

  • Still catholic at heart, only believed parts that suited him

  • Party influence by growing concern over the state of the catholic church in eng. A small minority or ordinary eng people, like lawyers felt let down by cc.
    due to poor quality of the clergy, moral laxity, church immorality and corruption of the church courts.
