Topic 2.Respiratory System Flashcards
Define Respiration
a process in living organisms involving the production of energy, typically with the intake of oxygen and the release of carbon dioxide from the oxidation of complex organic substances.
Define cellular respiration
The aerobic breakdown of glucose in the mitochondria to make ATP
Define the respiratory system
Is the organs in animals that exchange gases within the environment
What does the respiratory system allow
It allows animals to move oxygen (needed for cellular respiration) into body body tissues and remove CO2 (waste product of cellular respiration)from cells
Name 1 fact about Gas exchange by diffusion
Some animals simply allow gases to diffuse through the skins
Eg Flatworms
Structure specialised for gas exchange include :
- gills (aquatic animals )
- spiracles (terrestrial insects )
- lungs (most terrestrial vertebrates)
What are the uses of fish gills
- To increase gas exchange efficiency using countercurrent exchange
- Running blood through the system in the opposite direction so water keeps a diffusion gradient throughout the entire exchange
Gills exchange gases in fish .
What is the site of gas exchange in mammals
Alveoli
What does the human Respiratory include
Bronchi
Bronchioles
Alveoli
Trachea
What happens during inhalation
The diaphragm and intercostal muscles contact
What happens during exhalation
These muscles relax and the diaphragm domes upwards
State 2 facts about Alveoli
- The Alveoli are moist , thin -walled pockets which are the site of gas exchange
- A slightly surfactant that prevents the alveolar walls from collapsing and sticking together
True or false
The diaphragm contracts when you breathe in
True
What is the respiratory surface made up of
Made up of the alveoli on capillary
What is common between the walls of the capillaries and the alveoli
They share the same membrane
Free info โฆ
-Air entering the lungs contains more oxygen and less CO2 than the blood that flows in the pulmonary capillaries
