Topic 2 - The Periodic Table & Chemical Analysis Flashcards
What is a Mixture?
A mixture is made up of two or more substances that aren’t chemically joined.
What is a compound?
A combination of different atoms chemically joined together.
What is an element?
An element is made up of the same type of atom (same size and colour).
What is a soluble?
A soluble is something that dissolves in a solution.
What is an insoluble material?
Something that doesn’t dissolve in a solution.
What is a solvent?
A solvent is the liquid in which the solute dissolves in.
What is a solute?
A solute is he substance that dissolves in a liquid to form a solution.
What is a solution?
A solution is the mixture formed when a solute has dissolved in a solvent.
Explain what a pure substance is and give an example of one.
A pure substance is a substance made up of only one type of atom or molecule, an example of a pure substance is a diamond.
What is an impure substance and what is an example of one?
An impure substance is a substance that contains more than one type of atom or molecule and an example is salt water, containing sodium, chlorine and water.
What is the test for oxygen?
- Put some hydrogen peroxide in a test tube and add a tiny amount of manganese dioxide
- Hold a glowing splint in the mouth of the test tune and if oxygen is present it will re-light.
