Topic 2 - The Central Nervous System Flashcards
describe the central nervous system
The CNS is essentially the control centre of the body. All incoming messages from your environment, and how you respond to them, are processed in the CNS
Identify the structure of the human brain
The brain is a soft, heavy organ covered by three layers of connective tissue and cerebral fluid
made up of -
the cerebrum
the cerebellum
the brain stem
Outline the role of each lobe located in the cerebrum - the frontal lobe
It is divided into four main sections that are called lobes.
The Frontal Lobe -Located at the front
It’s functions include emotions, reasoning, movement, and problem solving
Outline the role of each lobe located in the cerebrum - the parietal lobe
The Parietal Lobe
Manages senses, including taste, pain, pressure, temperature and touch
Describe the function of spinal cord and its importance
The spinal cord has three major roles
Relays messages from the brain to different parts of the body causing them to respond
Sends messages from sensory neurons to the brain
Responsible for reflex actions
All the nerves that run through your body join up to the spinal cord.
Explain how damaging the spinal cord and how it would contribute to reflex actions.
damage to the spinal cord can prevent messages from travelling between your brain and other parts of the body.if it was crushed, messages would no longer be able to travel from your legs and feet up to your brain and back down again.
Outline the role of each lobe located in the cerebrum - the temporal lobe
The Temporal Lobe
Located near your ears
It deals with the recognition of sounds and smells
As well as speech and hearing
Outline the role of each lobe located in the cerebrum - the occipital lobe
The Occipital Lobe
Located at the very back of the brain
It’s responsible for sight and memory
