Topic 2 - Producing Data Flashcards
Whats Anecdotal data?
and university example?
- Individual cases
- That are striking in some way
- Not representative of any larger group of cases
> University does not increase wages
Whats available data?
two examples?
> Produced for some other purpose
but may help answer a question of interest
Census, Labour Force Survey (LFS)
Whats Anecdotal data?
and university example?
- Individual cases
- That are striking in some way
- Not representative of any larger group of cases
> University does not increase wages
Whats a census?
A census collects data from all cases in the population of interest
Whats a sample?
A sample select some cases from the population to represent the larger population (gain information about the whole population)
Whats primary data?
control and disadvantages..?
> Data collected by yourself;
- you have control over the type of sample, questions, etc.
but time-consuming, sometimes expensive…
Whats secondary data?
> data collected by someone else;
- no control over sample and questions
but cheap and fast to obtain, often very high quality…
What are sample surveys?
Sampling surveys are called observational studies, where we observe the variables of interest
but we do not attempt to influence the responses.
What are the cases on which the experiment is done are called?
experimental units
When the experimental units are human beings they are called?
subjects
Experimental conditions applied to the units are called?
treatments
what are the measured variables that are used to compare the treatments called?
